Callao has been restored to its former glory, with culture, cuisine and history evident in its commercial centre, where many colonial buildings still exist with stately houses and a seafront promenade. Callao and Lima are gateways to the legendary lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu – built in the fifteenth century, it was abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spaniards. In 1911, it was discovered by Professor Hiram Bingham, and was named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007 |

Today we embark on a city tour beginning with a visit to the Plaza Mayor, the official centre of the city and the site upon which Lima was founded. Here, we can see the Presidential Palace, and Archbishop's Palace (visits not included). We continue our adventure with a visit to the Cathedral of Lima. Entering by the main or central gateway, the "Door of Forgiveness," or via one of two other massive doorways, you'll marvel at the magnificent Churriguerra altars and beautifully–carved wooden choir stalls. Then we will continue to the Church of Santo Domingo. Admire the beautifully decorated walls with Spanish tiles from the 17th century and relax in the silence this place radiates. After you leave colonial Lima, you will drive through the residential districts of San Isidro and Miraflores. Both are suburbs where the rich and intelligentsia live. There are many large mansions, colonial buildings and fine hotels. Finally, you'll stop at El Parque del Amor for a great ocean view before finishing your tour. |
