Arrive

No wonder the people of Belize are always smiling. A historical Old Town, tropical beaches, mangroves, rainforests and Mayan ruins (and that's just for starters); it's an easy place to love.

Add a warm year–round climate, a seamless blend of cultures and a laidback welcome and you'll be wishing you could spend longer in this small but perfectly formed country. With Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the south and miles of Caribbean coastline, Belize cruise port is a riot of colour. Sink your toes into sugary soft sands and turquoise sea. Snorkelling is the best way to watch the rainbow of gaudy fish flitting the reefs. Go deeper with a dive expert to explore the limestone caverns within its complex caves. Inland there's a kaleidoscope of tropical wildlife within the sanctuaries and conservation parks. Listen out for the howler monkeys, Belize's national animal the tapir, and if you're really lucky, the camera–shy keel–billed Toucan.

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

The Mayan ceremonial centre of Xunantunich, meaning ‘stone woman', is spectacularly perched on a natural limestone ridge, providing a panoramic view of the hilly Cayo district.  Situated just 2 miles from the Guatemalan border, the site has been at the centre of archaeological interest for over 100 years.  After a coach drive you'll reach the site via a short ferry journey across the Mopan River.

The largest temple on the site, El Castillo, which is excavated and partially restored, is fascinating due to the band of stucco decoration which at one time extended around the whole temple.  Three of the carved stelae found on the site are exhibited for you to see, as well as 3 plazas and a partially excavated ball court.  A museum has been built on site at the entrance of the centre, providing an introductory history and display of the ruins.

After your visit, enjoy a traditional local lunch in San Ignacio, followed by some time for shopping before returning to Belize City.
