Located in northern Chile on the Pacific coast, Iquique is a busy city, with a rich history of significant landmarks such as the Astoreca Palace, built in a striking Georgian style at the turn of the 20th century, and now preserved as a museum; or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the deserted town of Humberstone, and the Santa Laura Saltpeter Works. Close by is the Atacama Desert, said to be one of the driest coastal deserts in the world; but is home to moisture–rich valleys, the San Pedro volcano and Tatio geysers. The city is considered to be one of the most important cities in the north of Chile, due to the abundance of natural mineral deposits found here, a valuable and coveted resource. |
